Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Mokha' to Hit Bangladesh and Myanmar Coasts on Sunday, IMD Issues Rain and Storm Warnings

New Delhi, May 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a red alert for Bangladesh and Myanmar, warning of an extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Mokha' that is likely to hit their coasts on Sunday.

The IMD said that 'Mokha' is currently over the Bay of Bengal, about 500 km west-northwest of Chittagong, Bangladesh, and about 600 km west-northwest of Yangon, Myanmar. It is moving north-northeast at a speed of 10 kmph and is likely to intensify further in the next 24 hours.

The IMD has advised fishermen in the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas to return to the coast by Saturday evening. It has also advised the authorities in Bangladesh and Myanmar to take all necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the storm.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Bangladesh and Myanmar from Sunday to Tuesday. It has also warned of storm surge of up to 3 meters in the coastal areas of the two countries.

The IMD has said that 'Mokha' is likely to bring heavy rains to India as well. It has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in northeastern India, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland, from Sunday to Tuesday.

The IMD has also warned of landslides and flash floods in the northeastern states. It has advised the authorities in the region to take all necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the storm.

The IMD has said that 'Mokha' is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm after it hits the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar. However, it has said that the storm is likely to bring heavy rains to India and Bangladesh.
