Former Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal on Sunday targeted the Modi government and said that women's reservation can come into effect from the 2034 Lok Sabha elections. The Rajya Sabha member made the comments in his new 'Dil Se' initiative, under which he is having a fortnightly conversation with a journalist on important issues.
In the first episode posted on social media, Sibal talked about the Women's Reservation Bill, the controversy over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri's derogatory remarks against BSP MP Danish Ali and the new Parliament building. Asked about Bidhuri's remarks, Sibal said the BJP MP should be expelled from Parliament.
Sibal defeated Congress's K. Pointing to Suresh, who was on the bench when the incident took place in the Lok Sabha last week, he said, 'I have not seen anything like this in my 30-year long career in Parliament. Never seen such dirty language, such venom and I was surprised and shocked even by the person who said that I will see the record and then delete it. On the controversy over Bidhuri's remarks, Sibal said that such people should be expelled from Parliament.
Sibal said, 'Imagine what would have happened if any member of that (Danish Ali's) community had done a similar thing and what the presiding officer would have done.' Sibal, who was the Union Law Minister between May 2013 and May 2014, said, 'We have created such a poison in the society that people of a particular community can say anything and get away with it.'
When asked about the Women's Reservation Bill, Sibal said that he doubted that the government wants to pass this bill immediately. “If they were genuine, this would have been done in 2014 itself,” he said. Asked when the bill could come into effect, Sibal said, 'Not in 2029.' Let me tell you why. The last delimitation was done in 1976, then we had the 84th Constitutional Amendment which said that we will stop delimitation. Now in 2026, if you start doing the census, as you know it is a big exercise, we have more than 1.4 billion people, then it will take one to one and a half years.
