A committee headed by the cabinet secretary will interview five candidates for the post of RBI deputy governor on June 1. The extended tenure of RBI Deputy Governor MK Jain is coming to an end on June 21. The post of deputy governor is reserved for commercial bankers.
Five candidates, including the non-executive chairman of a public sector bank, have been shortlisted for the post. Sources said the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) headed by the cabinet secretary will interview the candidates in Delhi. The name selected in the interview will be sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister for final approval.
Apart from the cabinet secretary, the committee includes the RBI governor, the financial services secretary, and two independent members. As per the RBI Act, 1934, there should be four deputy governors in the central bank, which are currently MK Jain, Michael Debabrata Patra, M Rajeswara Rao, and T Rabi Shankar. The deputy governor is appointed for three years. His tenure can be extended. The deputy governor gets a salary of Rs 2.25 lakh per month and other allowances.
